KUALA LUMPUR – Over 50 professionals, software developers, IoT experts and programmers from all over Malaysia participated in The Grand Challenge Hackathon Series in KnowledgeCom Sdn. Bhd., Petaling Jaya between 21st and 23rd September 2018.
The Grand Challenge is a hackathon series organized by I Tech Train Sdn. Bhd., together with Malaysia Digital Economy Corporation (MDEC) as a strategic partner; title sponsor was KnowledgeCom Sdn. Bhd; First Solar as the theme partner and Knowledge group as event’s strategic partner.
Malaysia Digital Economy Corporation (MDEC) is the lead agency in driving the digital economy in Malaysia. The role is to build a vibrant digital economy and ensure that Malaysia plays a leading part in the global digital revolution.
As digital disruption is impacting all industries and businesses, Knowledgecom is in the forefront of this Digital Transformation wave. KnowledgeCom are catalyzing on the wave off IoT solutions through this hackathon, to help companies embark on 4th Industrial Revolution 4.0 (IR 4.0) digital transformation strategy.
Participants spend 3 days collaborating and creating occupancy sensors for parking lots and car garages. These Internet of Things (IoT) sensors and system will conserve energy by dimming lights in parking lots when there is no foot traffic. The data collected can be used for energy saving, behavior pattern analytics, parking bay management and more.
10 teams reached the finals and presented their solutions to the panel of judges from various backgrounds. The teams were judged based on their creativity, marketability, uniqueness and impact of the Minimum Viable Product. The three winning teams were awarded RM12,000 cash prizes and RM3,000 worth of prizes from the sponsors. Judges selected 3 teams based on their creativity and sustainable business model for pilot project which will take place by end of this year.
The Grand Challenge aims to bridge the gap between hackathon partners and start-ups to create a vibrant start-up ecosystem in Malaysia. Three other hackathons with their own themes and strategic partners took place in Penang, Kuching and Johor in last two months.
The final pitching for all the winners from Penang, Johor, Kuching and Kuala Lumpur will take place on October 3rd in Nexus Convention Centre, Bangsar South. A total of over RM 75,000 cash and RM 20,000 worth of gifts will be given out during The Grand Challenge Hackathon Series 2018.
